Do the Rockies have a starting Catcher?
Chris Ianetta is holding on to the starting catcher role, if only by a fingernail. So what is preventing him from losing the starting spot? Jose Morales has shown himself capable of spot duty once a week, but shoddy defense has widened the gap between the two catchers. The Rockies need a new backstop, whether by trade
or call-up. So who could the Rockies promote to possibly spark an otherwise stale offense? The Rockies have two young catchers in Willin Rosario and Jordan Pacheco. Willin Rosario might have been called up late last year had it not been for knee surgey and Jordan Pacheco is a recent convert to catcher with a major upside with the bat.
The season is nearing the mid-point and the Rockies are beginning to fall behind, which is really nothing new before the All-Star break. The Rockies brass made some risky moves this last winter and are now getting the results, which simply aren't good. Yorvit Torrealba was a proven veteran with a low price tag and the Rockies chose to go in another direction. Jose Lopez was low risk and high reward at second base but his poor defense couldn't be outweighed by the equally poor offense. Ty Wiggington was a less risky acquisition and provides depth at many positions with an average to below average glove. The Rockies need a spark and the catcher position should not be ignored. Chris Ianetta has been given ample time to prove his value at the major league level and has shown the career .234 BA is no fluke. Having a catcher with an impact bat is rare for most teams and the Rockies are no different. Should the Rockies give Ianetta more time to potentially become a better hitter or find a new catcher through call-up of trade?
