Pat Bowlen: Jay Cutler on the trading block

The soap opera continues...  "As the Broncos Turn" took a major turn today as Pat Bowlen released the following statement:

"Numerous attempts to contact Jay Cutler in the last 10 days, both by Head Coach Josh McDaniels and myself, have been unsuccessful. A conversation with his agent earlier today clearly communicated and confirmed to us that Jay no longer has any desire to play for the Denver Broncos. We will begin discussions with other teams in an effort to accommodate his request to be traded.”

So much for the idea that the Broncos and Jay Cutler would work things out. Now it's just a matter of time before we know where Jay gets traded and what we will get in return. There will be as many as 15 teams that will be interested in getting Jay Cutler. The rumors will run rampant and Jay Cutler will be the center of the NFL world.

Mr. Bowlen, I hope you're confident in your new head coach. Since Josh McDaniels took over, your team has become much older, lost its best player and alienated many fans. Perhaps as fans grew accustomed to Shanahan, you have grown accustomed to having loyal fans every year. I hope this is not the beginning of a bad run for the Denver Broncos.

Jay, I really liked you and so did many other Broncos fans. I'm pretty pissed off that I got a replica jersey last year. I thought you would be a Bronco for years to come and would bring home some championships. After witnessing your low-class whining and crying, I'm more than ready to see you go. You can blame the whole situation on McDaniels, but you didn't even have enough respect to talk to the man that wrote your paycheck for 2 years. Don't let the door hit you on the way out, it will be swinging pretty hard.

Brady Quinn & the #5 pick to Denver for Jay Cutler. Make it happen McDaniels, that's the best you'll do.

What will come of this situation? Does Pat Bowlen regret hiring McDaniels? What trades make sense?

The fact we have now given up hope for a resolution is almost a rude awakening. It is not really shocking, seeing how Cutler has been his natural immature self. I guess the only hope now is that we can use this to get extra help in return. Normally a 25 year old Pro-Bowl Quarterback with a rocket arm would have a huge price tag. We are now in a position where we probably have to trade him before the draft. That coupled with his record, interceptions, and immaturity will probably drive the price down.

I would like to think we may be able to get what San Diego got for Eli Manning. In that trade the Chargers got Phillip Rivers, or a high 1st round pick, much as the same as we would get a Brady Quinn. Ron Burgundy's squad also got a 3rd round pick that year, as well as the Giants 1st and 5th round picks, the next year. Essentially the Chargers received two 1st round picks, as well as one 3rd and one 5th round pick, for an unproven Eli Manning. I question if we are gonna be able to get compensation equal to what San Diego received.

Arguments can be made to say that the Broncos should get more, less, or the same amount of picks in return. Interestingly enough, the Lions and Browns each have an extra little nugget to throw in as a bargaining chip.

The Browns could conceivably package Shaun Rogers with Brady Quinn and thrown in a pick. A 1st round pick would probably be a stretch, but maybe a 2nd, or a 3rd and 5th. This trade, or one similar, would certainly give the Broncos a chance to make some real headway on the defense, especially with Shaun Rogers filling a huge need.

The Lions similarly have an extra piece with two 1st round picks this year. It is tough to imagine that they would part with both picks this year, given a need to rebuild after an 0-16 season. The Lions have the first pick, which could be used to take Stafford, and a subsequent package could help the Broncos add talent on defense.

Another possibility is that the Lions, or some other team could, involve Cleveland in a little three way action. If it were the Lions we could possibly take Curry and add a much needed pass rush. The problem with the 1st pick is the price tag that comes with it.

It will be very interesting to see how the high number teams pursuing Cutler may drive up the price. Trading Cutler could certainly end up being a good thing for the Broncos, if we get a talented QB in return along with some defensive pieces. Bronco fans can hope that a biding war is privately blowing up McDaniel's phone right now, cause we know Cutler wont be.

CIA-hole, you make some great points. I don't see a trade with the Lions, at least not for the #1 pick. The top pick gets paid way too much (JaMarcus Russell is all I have to say about that). The 20th pick could be in the mix, but Detroit has zero talent to trade on the defense.

The problem is, now that we are trading Cutler we have a need at QB. Since we are probably trying to get a starter in return, a package of additional draft picks will be smaller. The Broncos can decide to go with Simms, sign another veteran QB, and/or draft a Q, which will make the package of draft picks bigger. That may allow us to pick up some extra talent.

I just think its hilarious to see names of guys that come up, and the ridiculous trade scenarios. People start thinking like that guy in fantasy football who offers two bench players for Peyton Manning and Adrian Peterson. I can see throwing in a lesser QB in a package, to act as a stop gap. Thinking a bottom of the barrel QB makes a package of one pick worthwhile is just crazy. The starter people want to get rid of cannot be the center of a trade package for Cutler. Come up with a package that centers around draft picks or a good defensive player, and consider your garbage as the cherry on top that lands Cutler.

Yes i agree, the top pick gets paid way too much....up to 40 million guaranteed! Rediculous with the idea that they will ....(key word)..EVENTUALLY develop into a player worth $40 million. Thats a high risk. I would however I would like to see Cutler go 0-16....thats just the Bronco fan in me.

And now we wait ...yet again for the 2nd second coming of the man with the real "ROCKET ARM!"

Pat "Jays our Man" Bowlen... I hope you’re happy. The Teams Yours! You Run the Show!

I can’t decide who I hate more pat Bowlen or baby Hewy (Cutler). In all honesty it’s hard to be mad at JMac, I mean he screwed up, but he was put in a position to do so. I think his assessment of Jay Cutler may have been off but there could have been character flaws with Hewy that raised a red flag for JMac. He wanted Cassel... we get it! It didn’t happen and Hewy got pissed. Here is the real story....Pat "Dumb-Ass" Bowlen thought he could hire a head coach before a general manager...hmmmmmm...ahhh No. I don't care how in love you are with the guy, he has never been a head coach let alone a GM or a PR guy for that matter! You hire a GM and low and behold you insert accountability for the personnel on your football team....I guarantee that a GM could of put the Kibosh on JMacs brain fart. It seems as though everything was done "ass backwards" when Shanny got fired. Shanny may have had too much power but he was liked by the media and his players for the most part. He gave these young Bronco all-stars a lot of leash. I can remember a time that Shanny didn’t put up with bad character...remember Darrel Gardner....boop...GONE!
The Broncos best hope is to A. trade for a QB and draft picks or trade for some D lineman and draft picks with the option to sign a free agent veteran to play a stop gap role for 2 maybe three years. Who is out there? Well, not much...I would be willing to give Garcia a look. Some think Leftwich might suffice. Bottom line is that the Broncos have really turned back the clock on competing for Super Bowls with this blunder. Denver fans, I hate to say it but be prepared for a few 4-12 seasons.....its going to be dark for a while.

(side note: Its time for JMac to start doing radio shows, TV shows what ever, explain to the city what you were thinking, and what can we expect other than 4-12!!!!)

I'm glad I don't work in the public relations department for the Broncos...can you say nightmare. The worst part is that the Broncos make no public statements, never update the website and really do take for granted the great fans they have.

Great point about hiring a coach before addressing the general manager. This sounds a little like Al Davis!? Bowlen is obviously a smart man, but I think he's been staring at Bill Belichek's cutoff sweetshirts a little too lovingly. WAKE UP PAT, we're in DENVER, you own the BRONCOS.

Make your team a little more fan friendly and take some "Ownership" in your product.

Ok! It all started with Pat Bowlen, When Shanahan got fired everyone thought the Broncos should hire a defensive coach. RIGHT? The Broncos had a pretty well rounded offense in place, but a ridiculously horrible defense. We already had a young offensive coordinator who had been working with the team for a year. But then Bowlen goes out and hires a offensive coach. WHY? It makes no sense, if they hired Spagnuolo I promise there are no problems right now, at least with Cutler. Now that Bowlen screwed it all up, and can't fix the situation they are forced to trade Cutler. Here is what I think they should do. First stay away from Brady Quinn, he is no good the Broncos will regret getting him. Think about this, how about Peppers and the Panthers 1st round pick for Culter and the Broncos 3rd round pick. Peppers wants out of Carolina and Delhome is always injured. Then the Broncos draft Sanchez let him sit for a year and they go 500 this year while Simms shows us how bad he really is. Then we could draft Ray Mauliuga (how ever it is spelled) and get our defense to start looking decent. Oh ya, CIA I seem to remember some pretty bad trades that you use to offer in Fantasy football yourself, not much room to talk!

As I recall you made a trade with me last year, so it's not like I don't make legitimate offers. Also, you are speaking from last place, so not much room to talk. The problem being sometimes people don't realize when legit fantasy offers smack them in the face, so I send BS ones to humor myself. Never have I seriously tried to pull a Kyle Orton for Jay Cutler deal, emphasize seriously. But, back to real life, I wouldn't mind your trade idea, just change us sending them a lower pick to the other way around. I gotta think a 25 year old Pro Bowl QB carries a large price tag, but I guess it is Gay Butler. What would you think if the Bears player was Urlacher?

Carolina does not have a first round pick. Also, Peppers is going to look for a contract similar to Fat Albert Haynseworth...I'd stay away from that trade.

Very true, if we are wary of the 1st pick because of it's price tag, then we have to be just as cautious of Peppers as well. He will be looking for a monster deal with huge guaranteed cash just like Haynseworth. We may be able to afford him for a while, if we go with Simms or another cheap veteran and draft Sanchez, we wont have to sign Sanchez to a new deal for 4-5 years. But I was unaware Carolina didn't have a first round pick, that would certainly make it harder. That means they might have to include a third team if they really wanted Cutler.
